(Tune: “The Farmer in the Dell”
Let’s all plant
some seeds, (Pretend to dig.)
Let’s all plant
some seeds.
Hi, ho, it’s
spring you know,
Let’s all plant
some seeds.
The rain begins to
fall… (Wiggle fingers
down.)
The sun warms the
earth…(Arms over head.)
The seeds begin to
grow… (Pretend one arm is a plant.)
Growing,
Growing! What does a seed need to grow? Brainstorm with the children and write
their responses on the board. Take
five cups and draw the following as shown:
- soil, water, sun, air
- soil, water, air
- soil, water, sun
- soil, sun, air
- sun, air, water
Plant several bean
seeds in each cup. Encourage the
children to predict what will happen.
Observe. Evaluate
predictions after several weeks.
Popcorn Plants – This is the coolest experiment. You will need a plastic jar, paper
towel, popcorn kernels, and sand.
Roll up the paper towel to fit down in the jar. Fill the center of the jar with
sand. Place 5-10 popcorn kernels
between the inside of the jar and the paper towel. Water. Set in a
sunny window and observe.
Hint! Encourage children to draw pictures
daily to record plant growth.

We put a pea seed and a bean seed in a little plastic bag (from the jewelry section of Wal-Mart) with two wet cotton balls. We did this on Monday and now we are watching the seeds swell (they are almost to burst). I made a few extras because the kids can't keep their fingers off the seeds. We talked about what is happening, but we have done any drawings....yet.
ReplyDeleteBefore we put the seeds in the bags I had them try to guess what kind of seeds they were. The bean seed looked like a jellybean...so they figured that one out and the pea seed was easy. We planted the other seeds we looked at in dirt. They are excited to check them out first thing every day.
