WORDS IN A TEXT

RL.K.4.  Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.

Magic Clap – Select a vocabulary word from a book before you read it and explain the meaning to your class.   Tell them when they hear the word in the book they can clap their hands, stand up, or make some other motion.

Sign Language – Teach children signs for “understand” (bend index finger and wiggle by brain) and “don’t understand” (wiggle index finger and shake head “no”).  Explain that if they hear a word they don’t understand they should make the sign to let you know.

Tools of Good Readers – Teach children the song below to the tune of “Old MacDonald.”  Model the different strategies.  When reading, occasionally leave out a word.  Go back and read it again and let children suggest different words that make sense.
