MY MOTHER IS A BAKER

Would you like to know some of my favorite songs and how to use them as a springboard for learning in the coming school year?

First of all!!!  These are just silly songs!  Don't take the lyrics too seriously because the children don't.  They just have fun slurping, whining, and tickling in this song.

My Mother Is a Baker
My mother is a baker, a baker, a baker.
My mother is a baker.
She always goes like this,
“Yum! Yum!”

Father – Trashman -“Pee yew!”

Sister – Singer - “La ta de da…”

Brother –Cowboy - “Yahoo!”

Doggie – Licker – “Slurp! Slurp!”

Kitty – Scratcher – “Hssssss!”

Baby – Whiner - “WAH!”

Grandpa – Engineer – “Toot! Toot!”

Grandma – Tickler

CAREER EDUCATION
It's never too early to have children start thinking about careers and what they might want to do one day. In early childhood play encourages children to explore and pretend different roles and occupations.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
What type of things would you like to do in a job?

GUEST SPEAKERS
Invite parents and members of your community to come and speak in your class about their careers.

WHAT'S YOUR BAG?
Give each child a brown paper bag and ask them to interview their parents about their jobs. What do they like best about their job? How did they train for their job? Put a tool, picture, or other object that represents what they do in the bag and share it with classmates.

WHEN I GROW UP!
Have a special day where children dress for the job they'd like to have one day. Ask them why they chose that job, how they will prepare for it, and so forth.

OLDIES, BUT GOODIES

I was looking through old photos and I found several pictures that are worth a “thousand words.”

Occupation in a Bag (Megan Pope)

When studying community helpers, send home a paper bag with each student. Ask them to put in items that explain what their parents do. This is great for parents who are too busy to come in and speak about their job.

Song Balloons (Kathleen Salazar)

Cut paper balloons out of construction paper and write the names of songs on the balloons. Spread them out at circle time and let children take turns picking a “balloon” for the class to sing.

*Write the names of songs on strips of paper and place them in plastic eggs. Children pick an egg and then open it to see what song they will sing.

Stickies
Purchase vinyl stickies at the dollar store. Let children arrange them on pizza pans (also from the dollar store).

Where Is Square?

Use the tune from “Where Is Thumbkin?” to reinforce colors, shapes, numerals, letters, etc. For example, children could each have a set of cards with the shapes (colors, words, letters, etc.) drawn on them. Store these in zip sandwich bags or lunch bags. Ask them to hold up the appropriate shape as you song:

Something New!
How about a new video about an "oldie, but goodie" song?

Here's a link so you can download a free book to  go with the song:

WHEN I GROW UP!

It's never too early to have children start thinking about careers and what they might want to do one day.  In early childhood play encourages children to explore and pretend different roles and occupations.

Jonie Watanabe Tsuji (a National Certified Counselor) defines career readiness simply:
It’s about being able to have conversations, well-spoken ones, on jobs and your place in a      world filled with them.

Questions she suggests you ask at all ages:

AWARENESS OF OCCUPATIONS

Encourage children to think about different occupations in their family, your school, community, city, and around the world.

*block play - build a farm, restaurant, airport, hospital, and so forth

*dramatic play - set up a grocery store, veterinarian's office, bank, art studio, and so forth

*field trips - when you take field trips talk about the people that work in different locations

*books - as you read point out occupations of characters in the book

OCCUPATIONS FROM A TO Z

Take turns in identifying an occupation that begins with each letter of the alphabet.

*Discuss skills or tools that someone who chose this occupation would need.
