AT THE END OF THE DAY

Start on a positive note and end on a positive note with these ideas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9QbZnLqeMw

Good-Bye Chant
Put your thumbs up if you learned something new today. (Put thumbs up.)
Clap your hands if you had fun today. (Clap hands.)
Give yourself a hug if you were a kind friend today. (Hug self.)
See you tomorrow for another special day. (Wave and smile.)

Car Wash
How about a "car wash" at the end of the day?  Students form two lines facing each other to make the “car wash.” Students hold up palms and circle them around. One child at a time walks through the car wash as friends gently touch their hand and say something positive.

Pat on the Back
Cut hand shapes out of construction paper. Write a positive comment about each child on a hand. Tape the hand to their back before they leave at the end of the day.

Partner Share
Children turn to a friend and tell their favorite thing they did at school that day.

Brain Tickets
Purchase raffle tickets at a dollar store or run off your own tickets. Before children leave each day they have to tell you something they learned to earn a brain ticket. Encourage parents to ask their children what they did to earn their brain ticket each day.

Read a Book
I can't remember who shared this idea with me, but I thought it was a wonderful way to end the school day because it would give children something beautiful in their brain when they went home.

TODALOO

I've seen several versions of "See You Later, Alligator." The kids enjoyed it so much that my daughter wrote a similar song called "Todaloo." It can be sung to the tune of "Down by the Bay."

Todaloo
Bye bye dragon fly
Toodaloo tennis shoe
Wave to me bumble bee
Give a hug ladybug
Time to bale blue whale
Catch the bus octopus
Gotta scat alley cat
Take care teddy bear
Hit the road old toad
Time to swish gold fish
Hit the course race horse
Catch a cab hermit crab
You’re a love turtledove
We had fun bubblegum
We had a laugh giraffe
Good luck rubber duck
Take a boat billy goat
Vamoose Mr. Moose
Never fear reindeer
Time to go black crow
Come again, red hen
Learned a lot tater tot
See you later, alligator
After while crocodile.

Both "Todaloo" and "See You Later, Alligator" make great class books.  First, enlarge the words and put one line on each page.  After singing the song several times, let children choose a verse and illustrate it for the book. Punch holes and bind with book rings.

*Let the children all sign their names as “Illustrators."

Good-bye Friends!
See you later, alligator!
After while, crocodile!
In an hour, sunflower!
Maybe two, kangaroo!
Gotta go, buffalo!
Adios, hippos!
Chow, chow, brown cow!
See you soon, baboon!
Adieu, cockatoo!
Better swish, jellyfish.
Chop chop, lollipop.
Gotta run, skeleton!
Bye-bye, butterfly!
Better shake, rattlesnake.
Good-bye, my good friends!

KARATE WRITING AND GOOD-BYE FRIENDS

Karate Writing

We’re going to say the alphabet with karate motions. For letters that start at the top dotted line we will punch up high. For letters that start at the middle dotted line we will punch out in front of us. For letters with a tail that go below the line we will give a little kick. When we have finished we will fold our hands together and bow as we say, “The alphabet.”

A – punch from waist
B – punch up in the air
C – punch from waist
D – punch up in the air
E – punch from the waist
F – punch up in the air
G – give a little kick…etc.

Letter Sort
Make a brochure by folding a sheet of paper into thirds as shown. In the top section write letters that start at the top dotted line. In the middle write letters that start at the middle dotted line. Place letters with a tail that go below the line in the bottom section.

Hint! Do this as a large group activity with younger children, but challenge older students to do this independently.

Sight Words
Spell sight words with karate writing. Say the word and then punch it out. Fold hands as you repeat the word and bow.
*Younger children will enjoy doing this with their names.
*Older students can review spelling words or vocabulary words with karate writing.

Good-bye Friends!
See you later, alligator!
After while, crocodile!
In an hour, sunflower!
Maybe two, kangaroo!
Gotta go, buffalo!
Adios, hippos!
Chow, chow, brown cow!
See you soon, baboon!
Adieu, cockatoo!
Better swish, jellyfish.
Chop chop, lollipop.
Gotta run, skeleton!
Bye-bye, butterfly!
Better shake, rattlesnake.
Good-bye, my good friends!

*This song also makes a great class book.  Let the children dedicate the book and then add the school's name as the publisher and the copyright date. The children can sign their names as “Illustrators,”  and be sure and add “The End."

Here’s a book you can download to go with the song:

WE HAD A GOOD DAY  (Tune: La Cuckla Racha)
We had a good day, we had a great day. (Wiggle back and forth on feet to the beat.)
So pat yourself on the back. (Pat yourself on the back.)
We had a good day, we had a great day.
So pat yourself on the back.

We thought a lot today (One finger in the air and turn in a circle.)
We learned in many ways,
So kiss your brain. (Kiss fingertips and then kiss brain.)
We thought a lot today, we learned in many ways,
So kiss your brain.

It’s time to say so long and end with a song. (Palms up and wiggle wrists to the beat.)
Wave good-bye to your friends. (Wave hands.)
It’s time to say so long and end with a song.
Wave good-bye to your friends.

What Did You Learn Today? (Chant)
Hey, hey, what do you say? (Clap and snap to the beat.)
What did you learn in school today?
When the teacher points your way
What will you say?
(Teacher points to children and they say what they learned.)

Hey, hey, what do you say?
We all had a special day!
Now, turn to a friend and say
What you learned today.
(Children share what they learned with friends.)

Brain Tickets
Purchase raffle tickets at a dollar store or run off your own tickets. Before children leave each day they have to tell you something they learned to earn a brain ticket. Encourage parents to ask their children what they did to earn their brain ticket each day.

THE COUCH POTATO POKEY AND THE MORE WE GET TOGETHER

This is a fun version of a traditional song that children can do sitting or standing.

Couch Potato Pokey
You put your thumbs in. (thumbs out in front)
You take your thumbs out. (thumbs behind)
You put your thumbs in, (thumbs in front)
And you wiggle them all about. (wiggle thumbs)
You do the couch potato pokey, (wave arms in air)
And you roll your arms around. (roll hands over)
That’s what it’s all about! (slap, clap, snap)

You put your noses in…

You put your elbows in…

You put your eyebrows in…

You put your chins in…

You put your pinkies in…
Give a microwave with your pinkies
And say good-bye today,
Cause that’s all we’re going to play!

The More We Get Together (Traditional Tune - Sing in sign language.)
The more we get together, together, together.
The more we get together, the happier we’ll be.
For your friends are my friends,
and my friends are your friends.
The more we get together, the happier we’ll be.

The more we learn together…

The more we play together…

The more we sing together…

Here's a video where you can watch me sing these songs:

SO LONG! FAREWELL! GOOD-BYE!

A teacher recently asked if I had a good-bye song.  Well, yes I do!  I have quite a few!  A good-bye song and handshake are a positive way to end your day.

It Is Time to Say Good-Bye (Tune: "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain")
(Clap your hands and stomp your feet to the beat.)
It is time to say good-bye to all my friends.
It is time to say good-bye to all my friends.
It is time to say good-bye,
Give a smile and wink your eye. (Smile and then wink.)
It is time to say good-bye to all my friends. (Wave good-bye.)
Yeehaw!!! (Fist in the air.)

Goodbye Friends (Tune: “Where Is Thumbkin?”)
Goodbye friends.  (Wave good-bye.)
Goodbye friends. (Children repeat each line.)
Time to go.  (Point to clock.)
Time to go.
We had fun learning.
We had fun learning.
Love you so.  (Cross arms as if hugging and then point to children.)
Love you so.

The More We Get Together  (Traditional Tune - Sing in sign language.)
The more we get together, together, together.
The more we get together, the happier we’ll be.
For your friends are my friends,
and my friends are your friends.
The more we get together, the happier we’ll be.

The more we learn together…

The more we play together…

The more we sing together…

3 –H Good-bye
Heigh-de-ho, heigh-de-hay,
Sure am glad you came today.
Before you go, what do you say?
Hug, handshake, or high-5 today?

*Cut out a hand (handshake), heart (hug), and "5" (high five). Children choose the one they want to give the teacher before they leave the classroom.

Car Wash
Children form two lines facing each other and begin moving their hands in a circular motion like a car wash. One child at a time walks down the center of the car wash as friends gently touch them and say something positive about them.

Thumbs Up
Put your thumbs up if you learned something new today. (Put thumbs up.)
Clap your hands if you had fun today. (Clap hands.)
Give yourself a hug if you were a kind friend today. (Hug self.)
See you tomorrow for another special day. (Wave and smile.)
