MACARENA BONES

You know, sometimes it's fun to expose children to something that is NOT in the curriculum - just because!  Children are fascinated with their bodies and this is a fun way to teach them the names of the bones in their body.

MACARENA BONES

Tarsal, tibia, Fibula, patella.

Femur, pelvis, ribs, Sternum.

Carpal, ulna, Radius, humerus.

Hey, kiss my cranium!

Alex May, my webmaster extraordinaire, even made these cards for you.

Large cards -

Small cards -

Note!  These links will be in the description for the video on YouTube, and the cards can be downloaded directly from YouTube.

Want to learn about your muscles.  Well, check out this song:

Head, Muscles, Baby 1-2-3  (Tune:  "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes")
Head, (Touch head.)
Deltoids, (Touch top of shoulders.)
Baby (Clap hands.)
1 (Tap right hand with partner.)
2 (Clap hands.)
3 (Tap left hand with partner’s left.)
Head, deltoids, baby, 1 – 2 – 3.
Head, deltoids, head, deltoids, head, deltoids, baby, 1 – 2 – 3.

Deltoids – pecs (Touch shoulders and chest.)

Pecs – abs (Touch chest and stomach.)

Abs – biceps (Touch stomach and tops of arms.)

Biceps – triceps (Touch tops of arms and then backs of arms.)

Triceps – quads (Touch backs of arms and thighs.)

Quads – glutes (Touch thighs and bottom.)

Baby, please sit down. (Sit down.)

Activities: What are muscles used for? What would happen if you didn’t have muscles? What muscles do you use to walk? Carry your book bag?

Brainstorm what you can do to build strong muscles.

Use other body parts or bones in this song.

Explain that “pecs” is short for pectoral muscles and “abs” is short for abdominal muscles. What are “quads” and “glutes” short for?

Trace children’s bodies on butcher paper and let them add bones, muscles, organs, etc.

BALANCE, TIGHTEN - RELAX, AND TONY CHESTNUT

Balancing Act
Balancing requires no special equipment and is a powerful way to improve core strength and increase mindfulness.

Feet together, close your eyes, (Close eyes breath in and out.)
And breath slowly in and out.
Open your eyes, (Balance on left foot.)
Lift your right foot and balance on the left.
Put your arms out straight. (Arms out wide as you balance.)
Now reach for the stars. (Arms up in the air as you balance.)
Place your right foot on the floor
And raise your left foot. (Balance on right foot.)
Put your arms out straight. (Arms out wide as you balance.)
Now reach for the stars. (Arms up in the air as you balance.)
Place your left foot on the floor...

Tighten and Relax

This video will help children release stress by tightening and relaxing different body parts.

Squeeze your hands tight as you can. Tighter. Tighter. Now relax.
Squeeze your toes tight as you can. Tighter. Tighter. Now relax.
Squeeze your arms…

Legs… Shoulders… Mouths… etc.

Five Finger Breathing
Children stretch out one hand like a star. They take the pointer finger of the other hand and trace the outside of the thumb as they inhale. They exhale as they trace the inside of the thumb. Inhale as they go up the index finger. Exhale as they go down the index finger. Continue inhaling and exhaling until all the fingers have been touched.

*Reverse and do the same thing using the opposite hand and finger.

Tony Chestnut

Point to the body parts as you sing. Sing each verse softer until you are doing the silent version.

Tony Chestnut
Toe (Point to toes.)
Knee (Point to knee.)
Chest (Point to chest.)
Nut (Point to head.)
Nose (Point to nose.)
Eye (Point to eyes.)
Love (Cross arms over chest.)
You (Point to a friend.)
Toe Knee Nose (Continue to point to body parts.)
Toe Knee Nose
Toe Knee Chest Nut
Nose Eye Love You
That’s what Toe Knee Nose.

Continue singing softer each time.
